How Does KYBELLA® Work?
KYBELLA® contains deoxycholic acid, which is made by the human body to help break down and absorb fats in the digestive system. Deoxycholic acid’s abilities don’t stop there, however. When injected into fat pockets found just below the skin, the acid causes the destruction of fat cells it encounters.
Diet and exercise do not remove fat cells from the body. Instead, successful lifestyle efforts cause fat cells to shrink. The number of fat cells in a given area, such as below the chin, stays the same—and shrunken cells can grow large again in the future.
Fat cells broken down by KYBELLA®, however, are different, in that they no longer physically exist as fat cells. Their contents are processed by the body, leading to fewer fat cells in the targeted area and a resulting reduction in volume. Fat cells removed this way will not “re-grow.” It is important, however, to maintain a sensible diet and engage in routine physical activity—not just for health, but to best maintain the results of a treatment session.

Does KYBELLA® Have Side Effects?
Every fat-reduction treatment has potential side effects, and KYBELLA® is no exception. Possible side effects include such typical injection-related reactions as temporary swelling, bruising, discomfort/pain, numbness, redness, and areas of firmness. Rare side effects include trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw, which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness. All possible and reported side effects have been resolved over time.
While KYBELLA® is a safe fat-reduction treatment, it is vitally important to choose licensed and experienced providers who truly understand how the injectable works and how to maximize cosmetic results while minimizing risk.
Does KYBELLA® Require Downtime?
No rest, recuperation, or recovery is needed after a KYBELLA® session. Normal daily activities can be resumed right away.
The deoxycholic acid will get to work as soon as it is injected, though the results will take some weeks to be seen. Many patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile in as few as one to four treatment sessions spaced approximately two to four months apart, though up to six treatments may be administered to achieve ideal results. Your injector and you will take the time to design a customized treatment plan to help you improve your chin profile or the look of other desired areas.

What Else Is Available for Fat Reduction?
KYBELLA® is not the only nonsurgical fat-reduction treatment available at Radiance Skin Therapy. We also offer CoolSculpting®, which can chill fat cells in large or focused areas to cause gradual volume reduction. This treatment can be used most areas KYBELLA® can, with the exceptions of the jowl area, where only KYBELLA® can be used.
Often, sagging skin can contribute to a look of fullness. Genius RF Microneedling uses a combination of radiofrequency and microneedling to stimulate collagen and elastin offering a lifting and tightening result on the neck, while injectable Silhouette InstaLift® sutures or a dermal filler such as Juvederm Voluma® can provide a midface lift that reduces the look of jowls for a more defined jawline.
