Ablative vs Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
Lasers are incredibly effective treatment options for patients who want to address both signs of aging and skin damage due to environmental factors and more. Just like there are multiple cosmetic skin conditions that patients would like to address, there are multiple ways that lasers can be applied. Some are ablative, meaning they remove the outermost layer of skin. Others, like LaseMD at Madison’s Radiance Skin Therapy, are non-ablative.

Ablative Lasers
To ablate something is to remove it, meaning ablative lasers use powerful light to physically take away the cells at the surface. This can be an effective way to clear signs of aging that appear there, such as fine lines, as well as to encourage increased circulation and new collagen production. While effective, the treatment does require recovery and healing time.
Non-Ablative Lasers
Laser light does not have to remove an entire layer of skin to be effective. Some lasers emit energy that passes through the surface and heats the tissues beneath, where new collagen is created. Others, such as LaseMD, create only “micro-channels,” which are tiny columns in the skin—each one prompting a natural healing response that also improves the look and feel of the surrounding tissue. This approach allows for an effective treatment without the healing time associated with ablative options.
LaseMD is ideal for treating melasma, spots, and other hyperpigmentation probems, as well as certain scars, wrinkles, actinic keratoses, and more.
