What is Acne?

Tiny holes, called pores, can become clogged by oil, bacteria, dead skin cells, and dirt. This can lead to pimples or zits. These can appear anywhere on your skin. This condition tends to occur on the face, forehead, chest, upper back, and shoulders because these are the areas with the highest number of oil (sebaceous) glands. Although commonly thought of as an issue for tweens or teens, many people continue to be affected by acne later in life. The idea that breakouts clear up with age is one of the most popular myths about this disorder. This is the most common skin condition in the United States.

What Causes Acne?

When your pores become blocked with dead skin, oil, and bacteria, acne can occur. This may happen when follicles produce too much oil, there is a buildup of dead skin cells in the pores, or bacteria builds up in the pores. There are four main causes: excess oil production, clogged hair follicles, bacteria, and inflammation. There are also often specific triggers or things that worsen it such as hormonal changes, certain medications, dietary factors, and stress.

What are the Risk Factors for Acne?

The risk factors for acne include age, hormonal factors, family history, greasy or oily substances, and friction or pressure on the skin.

Which Treatments for Acne are Available from Radiance Skin Therapy?

Acne does not pose any serious risks to your overall health but the severe form of it can become painful, and scars may eventually form. However, the visible changes to your skin can have a negative impact on yourself-esteem and self-confidence.

Our team can provide tips and acne treatments to help you control this condition, avoid scarring or other forms of skin damage associated with breakouts, and minimize scars. If you have tried over the counter acne products for at least several weeks and they have not been effective, it may be time to consider prescription-strength products. The type of regimen we recommend will be based on several factors including your age, the type and severity of your condition, and what you are willing to commit to. What makes things more complicated is the fact that different types require different approaches.

We offer treatments that can improve acne such as:
  • The Neo Elite by Aerolase, a medical lasersystem that can improve multiple forms of this skin condition by targeting specificbacteria colonies that buildup in the skin. It can also reduce inflammation andoil production.
  • Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), a light-based procedure that uses multiple wavelengths of light to improve various skin concerns caused byacne. Radiance Skin Therapy offers the Alma Iris Dye-VL. • LED Light Therapy is a non-invasive option that involves different LED light options to provide many benefits such as killing bacteria, prevent breakouts, and calm inflammation.
  • Microneedling, a treatment that involves creating micro-injuries to trigger the body’s healing response and stimulate collagen production, to reduce scars from breaks that cause inflammation and trauma to the skin tissue.
  • Chemical peels are also an effective solution as they can address bacteria and inflammation while also removing blockages from pores.
  • HydraFacial® involves a process of deep cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, and hydration.
  • Supplements to support healthy, balanced skin and reduce the frequency of breakouts.
Which Other Skin Conditions Can Be Treated?

There are also many types of injectables and skin rejuvenation options to help you enhance your skin’s appearance. BOTOX®, a neuromodulator, reduces dynamic wrinkles.
