Many people are affected by skin discoloration.Sun exposure, medications, pregnancy, and certain health conditions can lead to skin pigmentation issues. Madison, WI’s Radiance Skin Therapy & Laser Center can provide advice about treating skin pigment disorders.
The color in your skin comes from a substance made by skin cells called melanin. Damaged or unhealthy skin cells can sometimes produce too much melanin that clumps together, causing discolored areas. When the color of your skin is different than what’s normal to you, this is what’s referred to as skin discoloration or pigmentation issues. The spots or patches associated with skin discoloration may be brown, red, white, pink, purple, or black. The color of these patches or markings depends on your natural skin tone and what’s causing the color to change.
Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common pigmentation issues that results in some areas of skin appearing to be darker than the rest of the skin tone. Other examples of pigmentation issues may appear as birthmarks or spots left behind after an infection or disease. These conditions often only affect your skin’s color but, in some cases, they may cause other symptoms such as dryness, or scaly and itchy patches. Though they are usually not painful, these markings can make some people feel self-conscious. Dark spots on the skin are often called age spots or liver spots.
Skin redness or red patches are sometimes associated with sunburn or other burns, hot flashes, food sensitivities, reactions to medications, skin irritation, and other conditions such as rosacea and acne.

The sun is the main cause of skin hyperpigmentation. The skin creates more of a brown pigment called melanin to protect itself from sun damage. However, sometimes the skin does not make this pigment evenly and patchy pigmentation issues may appear. There are also other things that can cause discolored skin such as skin disorders, birthmarks, infection, skin cancer, injury or trauma, allergic reactions, medications, chemicals, and health conditions.
