Acne Treatment Basics: What Causes Acne?
Acne is a skin condition that can result in clogged pores (blackheads and whiteheads), inflamed pimples (pustules), and deeper lumps (nodules). It can occur on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms. Although most teenagers develop some form of acne, people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and even older adults can also deal with it. Breakouts can be caused by a number of different factors, including hormone fluctuations, bad skin-care habits, diet, and lifestyle.

Here are a few of the acne treatment options Radiance Skin Therapy & Laser Center offers in Madison:
Neo Elite
Neo Elite by Aerolase is a leading-edge 650-microsecond medical laser system clinically proven to be an effective treatment for multiple types of acne. The no-touch laser works by targeting acne-related bacteria colonies that accumulate in the skin, reducing oil production by heating up sebaceous glands, and diminishing inflammation. Most patients will experience a mild, tolerable heat during the acne treatment process. Due to the design of the laser, the skin surrounding the targeted concern won’t become overly heated or painful during acne treatments.
The system also offers an advanced and comprehensive solution to treating numerous other common medical skin conditions and aesthetic skin concerns. With up to 36 FDA indications—including spider veins, acne, angiomas, bruising, vascular lesions, redness, rosacea, other facial veins, pigmented lesions, warts, toe fungus, scars, and more—this powerful, safe, and effective approach is ideal for acne treatments, reducing hyperpigmentation, and general skin rejuvenation.
Alma Iris Dye-VL
In-office intense pulsed light acne treatments with the Iris Dye-VL component of Alma Harmony allows us to address vascular lesions and dyschromia with Advanced Fluorescence Technology (AFT). This is a safe, effective acne treatment with minimal downtime.
LED Light Therapy
LED Light Therapy is an in-office acne treatment that is FDA-approved, completely non-invasive, and painless, with no downtime required. There are different LED light options for different skin concerns. These acne treatment options (blue, red, and a combination of the two) can help kill acne-causing bacteria in the skin, reduce breakouts, calm inflammation, and more. A series of acne treatments may be necessary depending on the concern and severity.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are an effective acne treatment because they can reduce inflammation in the skin, destroy acne-causing bacteria, and clear out pores to reduce future breakouts. This type of exfoliation can also help to improve post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) caused by breakouts. A series of four to six superficial peels spaced two to four weeks apart can typically help to get acne under control. Maintenance acne treatments can be scheduled anywhere from four to eight weeks apart. Additionally, LED Light Therapy pairs well with peels for acne treatment.
HydraFacial®
HydraFacial® is the only hydra-dermabrasion acne treatment procedure that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration, and antioxidant protection into one session, resulting in clearer, more beautiful skin with no discomfort or downtime. This effective acne treatment delivers results comparable to microdermabrasion, yet is soothing, moisturizing, and safe for any skin type.
Skin Supplements for Acne Treatment
Your skin is your largest organ. In order to maintain its health and integrity, it is critical that you take care of it, not only from the outside, but from the inside as well. Providing your skin with the right sort of nutrition can affect just as much change as topical acne treatments. Pairing the right supplements for your skin can help you to see faster and more lasting results!
Radiance carries several options for acne treatment, including Vitamin A, skin omegas, and Skin Accumax. Once we get to know you and your skin, we can help you know which is going to be most appropriate for your skin’s needs.
Your skin loves Vitamin A, especially if you have acne, are prone to acne, or have oily skin with the occasional breakout. Vitamin A is a potent antioxidant that helps reduce sebum production, encourages healthy cell production and growth, and can strengthen your skin’s firm and healthy tissue.
Many of our clients have had success pairing Vitamin A with omega 3 fatty acids, known as the “good fat” vital to a balanced diet. These fatty acids can also enhance your acne treatment results and calm inflammation caused by acne.
Skin Accumax contains a synergistic combination of vitamins and plant nutrients that address the internal factors of problem skin. This unique combination of ingredients helps as an oral acne treatment to improve skin texture and clarity.
What is the Best Treatment for Acne Scars?
There are different types of acne scars, ranging from atrophic scars to hypertrophic and keloid scars. Additionally, some people experience a darker or discolored patch left behind on their skin after their acne heals. Though some refer to this discoloration as an “acne scar,” it is not true scarring. The discolored spots are called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).
If you have dealt with acne in the past and need to reduce the severity of acne scars or PIH, there are many acne treatments available to address them. Chemical peels, skincare products such as retinoids, LaseMD Ultra™, and microneedling can help to improve PIH. For true scarring, we may recommend CoolPeel or DEKA laser treatments, fractional non-ablative acne treatments with ClearSkin Pro laser by Alma® for laser skin resurfacing, and Lutronic Genius® RF Microneedling.
