What Can Chemical Peels Do?

Because of the aging process and environmental stressors, our skin cells tend to slow down and become “sluggish” over time. This leads to dullness, dryness, and visible signs of breakdown and damage.

Regular chemical peels can help to rejuvenate your look by revitalizing your skin and giving its cells a “push” back toward being productive. This makes peels ideal for addressing a range of concerns, such as dryness, uneven skin tone, skin texture, congested pores, dullness, acne, and more!

Specifically, chemical peels offer numerous benefits, including lightening pigmentation irregularities, reducing fine lines, increasing skin hydration, strengthening the epidermis (outermost layer of skin), and restoring a healthy glow.

Who Are the Best Candidates for Chemical Peels?

Individuals with any skin type or texture could be good candidates for chemical peels. We will review your medical history and any of your current or past medical conditions to help you decide whether a chemical peel would be right for you. However, not everyone is a good candidate. If you have a history of abnormal skin scarring, an active skin disease, infections, scarring, broken skin or cuts, dermatitis, frequent or severe outbreaks of cold sores, or are prone to having excess pigmentation on your scars, have had certain types of acne treatments within the past year, or have certain skin conditions or take medications that make your skin more sensitive than normal, then chemical peels might not be suitable for you. We will inspect the tone and thickness of the skin on the area that you intend to treat to help you decide whether a peel would be the best approach. We can help you decide on the best course of action to enhance the quality of your skin.

What Types of Chemical Peels Are Available?

There are different levels of chemical peels at Radiance Skin Therapy & Laser Center, each with a different intensity and intended outcome. The two main levels of peels we offer are superficial chemical peels (also known as “exfoliations”) and medium-depth chemical peels. At Radiance, we offer:

  • PCA SKIN® Chemical Peel Solutions
  • Our very own, specially formulated Radiance Peels
  • VI Peel Original
  • VI Peel Precision Plus
  • VI Peel Purify with Precision Plus
  • RevePeel Enlighten Depigmentation System
  • RevePeel Fresh®

Exfoliations are beneficial for many different skin concerns. Patients with acne can achieve a more clear complexion. Those with textural concerns achieve smoother, more vibrant skin. Patients with uneven skin tone see irregularities fade. No matter what the reason, exfoliations done on a regular basis can help manage and resolve numerous skin troubles.

When you choose an exfoliation or superficial chemical peel vs. a deeper peel, you should plan on a treatment every four to six weeks to get the results you want and help maintain your more youthful appearance.

If you desire an accelerated result, you might opt for one of our medium depth chemical peels. Only a few days of downtime are required, and results from these peels are quicker and don’t require as many treatments in a year.

The RevePeel Enlighten Depigmentation System Chemical Peel

The Enlighten Depigmentation System is a new type of skin lightening system. It consists of an intense mask treatment along with a home care regimen that can help to minimize various types of skin blemishes, hyperpigmentation, melasma, dark spots, blotchy or scarred skin, dull skin, enlarged pores, and discoloration.

The RevePeel Fresh® Chemical Peel

RevePeel Fresh® is a phenol-based combination chemical peel effective on virtually any skin type. This treatment is designed to nourish and repair skin to restore a more vibrant, healthy appearance. It has many benefits, including reducing enlarged pores, minimizing fine lines, improving acne and acne scars, and reducing hyperpigmentation after just one application. Another benefit of RevePeel Fresh® is that it stimulates the skin’s natural collagen production. This chemical peel is quick, simple, and highly effective with no downtime necessary. You will need to avoid retinoids and exfoliation for 48 to 72 hours prior to this treatment. Afterward, you may look as if you have a mild sunburn at first, followed by light peeling and then heavier peeling in the following days. Avoid physical exertion and sweating for a few days, and avoid saunas or hot yoga for one week. It’s recommended that patients undergo a series of RevePeel Fresh® treatments to optimize results, which can initially be seen within one to two weeks.

Which Areas of the Body Can Be Targeted with a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels aren’t just for the face and neck! The treatments are also great for most areas of the body. Some of our most popular applications include back acne (bacne), texture and pigment irregularities on the arms, and underarm hyperpigmentation known as “acanthosis nigricans.”

What Can Help Before a Chemical Peel at Madison’s Radiance Skin Therapy?

Using medical-grade skincare products prior to an exfoliation is not necessary, but the strategy can be helpful for maximizing results. Think of it like brushing your teeth between dental visits! Not only can medical-grade skincare products maximize results, they can also reduce unnecessary side effects.

For best results with any depth peel, we recommend that you use medical-grade skincare products for six to eight weeks before a treatment. In fact, all of Radiance’s peels can be incredibly effective when combined with medical-grade products to help aging skin conditions or bothersome acne.

What Is Recovery Like After a Chemical Peel?

It’s common to experience swelling, dryness, flaking, and peeling after any type of chemical peel. The time it takes to recover from a chemical peel will vary depending on the invasiveness of the treatment. No matter the peel, however, a physical (zinc/titanium-based) sunscreen should be applied to the skin every day after healing.

How Long Will the Results from a Chemical Peel Last?

The results you can achieve from chemical peels vary depending on the depth of penetration, but you can generally achieve dramatic and impressive results. Keep in mind that we can’t prevent the skin from continuing to age and change, so the results from a chemical peel are temporary. Sun damage can also cause changes to the skin tone and undo the results of a peel or exfoliation. You may further continue to acquire new facial wrinkles from repetitive facial expressions.

What Other Skin Treatments Are Available?

Chemical peels are great for rejuvenating the skin, but they are not the only option for exfoliating or inducing collagen production at Radiance Skin Therapy & Laser Center. Microdermabrasion, microneedling, HydraFacial® MD, and other strategies are also available—all of which work differently from peels. Microdermabrasion involves gently removing uneven, rough, or damaged skin from the surface by “polishing” it away. Microneedling involves using tiny, sterilized needles to create small wounds that stimulate new collagen. HydraFacial® MD is designed to cleanse, extract, and hydrate the skin for a renewed glow. It’s best to speak with your aesthetician to decide the best treatment plan for your skin to help you reach your goals.
