Wondering which wrinkle relaxer is right for you? We’re breaking down Dysport® vs. BOTOX® in simple terms. Both are neuromodulators (neurotoxins) made from botulinum toxin type A, used as minimally invasive cosmetic treatments to soften dynamic wrinkles (a.k.a. expression wrinkles) with precise wrinkle injections. Results are temporary and tailored to your goals. Here's what patients should know about how Dysport® at our Madison practice compares to BOTOX®.
Similarities You Should Know
Both Dysport® and BOTOX® work by temporarily relaxing targeted facial muscles that create dynamic wrinkles. Expect quick treatments, little to no downtime, and natural-looking smoothing when properly dosed. These injectables are a popular wrinkle treatment option for patients seeking a subtle refresh without surgery.
What Sets Dysport® Apart: Spreadability and Natural Movement
Dysport® was FDA-approved in 2009 to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe glabellar lines in adults. In practice, it sometimes kicks in a bit faster than competitors—results may be visible in a few days and can take up to two weeks to fully set. Anecdotally, some patients feel it lasts as long as, or sometimes longer than, other wrinkle relaxers, but individual results vary.
The "Spreadability" Advantage
A key differentiator is Dysport®'s diffusion profile. Its formulation can spread more readily in tissue, which helps create even, soft improvement—especially across larger, flatter areas like the forehead—often with fewer injection points. That spreadability is great for broad coverage and a light, natural feel, but it may be less ideal when we’re targeting very precise, tiny muscles (for example, around the brows) where ultra-focused placement matters.
Another potential benefit of Dysport® is its ability to reduce oil production. Some believe this injectable works better compared to the other botulinum type A injections for reducing sweat and oil production and pore size. However, it is not FDA-approved for this use, and more research is needed.
What To Expect from Your Visit
Most patients start to notice Dysport® within a few days, while BOTOX® may take a bit longer for some. Both typically reach peak effect within 1–2 weeks and wear off gradually over 3–4 months, depending on dose, metabolism, and treatment area. We’ll help you choose the neuromodulator and dosing strategy that fits your goals—whether that’s softening forehead lines, frown lines, or crow’s feet.
