Discover how advanced Helix laser technology allows us to personalize skin rejuvenation based on your skin concerns, desired results, and available downtime.
Fall is one of our favorite seasons for laser skin rejuvenation at Madison, Wisconsin’s Radiance Skin Therapy & Laser Center.
With summer behind us and less time spent in the sun, it's an excellent opportunity to address fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin texture, and visible signs of sun damage.
But choosing the right time for laser treatment is only part of achieving beautiful results.
Choosing the right technology—and customizing it to your individual needs—is just as important.
At Radiance, we offer CoolPeel CO₂ laser treatments using the advanced DEKA Helix laser platform.
While CoolPeel has become well known for improving skin texture and early signs of aging with relatively limited downtime, it's only one of the treatment options available with this versatile technology.
Helix allows us to customize laser resurfacing from lighter treatments to more intensive rejuvenation, giving our providers the flexibility to develop individualized treatment plans based on each patient's skin concerns, desired improvements, and recovery preferences.
Not all laser resurfacing treatments are the same, and not every patient needs the same level of correction.
One of the primary reasons Radiance invested in the Helix laser platform was its ability to offer multiple resurfacing approaches within one advanced system.
Helix combines two complementary laser wavelengths:
• 10,600 nm ablative CO₂ laser: Resurfaces the skin by creating controlled microscopic areas of tissue ablation, stimulating skin renewal and collagen remodeling.
• 1570 nm nonablative laser: Delivers controlled thermal energy into the skin to stimulate dermal remodeling without removing the skin's surface in the same way as ablative resurfacing.
These wavelengths can be used independently or combined within a customized treatment.
This dual-wavelength technology allows us to address different aspects of skin rejuvenation while adjusting treatment intensity according to each patient's needs.
For some patients, a lighter resurfacing treatment may provide the improvement they're seeking.
Others may benefit from more intensive CO₂ resurfacing or a combination of ablative and nonablative laser energy.
The advantage is flexibility. Rather than offering every patient the same laser treatment, we can customize our approach based on the degree of correction desired and the amount of recovery time a patient can accommodate.
The Helix platform offers several approaches to skin rejuvenation, including CoolPeel, Sultra, Fusion, and more intensive CO₂ resurfacing.
Each treatment offers different benefits, allowing our providers to recommend the most appropriate option based on individual skin concerns and goals.
CoolPeel uses the Helix platform's 10,600 nm fractional CO₂ laser to improve skin texture and visible signs of aging.
Unlike more aggressive CO₂ resurfacing treatments, CoolPeel is designed to deliver controlled resurfacing while limiting unnecessary heat exposure to surrounding tissue.
CoolPeel may help improve:
• Fine lines and early wrinkles
• Rough or uneven skin texture
• Enlarged pores
• Certain superficial signs of sun damage
•Overall skin appearance and quality
CoolPeel is particularly appealing to patients seeking visible skin rejuvenation without the extended recovery associated with more intensive resurfacing.
Patients may experience temporary redness, swelling, dryness, and a rough or sandpaper-like texture as the skin heals.
Although downtime is generally less than with more aggressive CO₂ treatments, recovery varies depending on treatment settings and individual skin characteristics.
Some patients benefit from a series of treatments to achieve their desired improvement.
Sultra uses the Helix platform's 1570 nm nonablative laser wavelength.
Unlike CO₂ resurfacing, which creates microscopic areas of tissue ablation, Sultra delivers controlled thermal energy into the skin while preserving more of the skin's surface.
This stimulates the body's natural remodeling response and supports collagen production.
Sultra may be appropriate for patients looking to improve overall skin quality, texture, and early signs of aging without undergoing traditional ablative resurfacing.
Because the treatment is nonablative, surface disruption is generally reduced compared with CO₂ resurfacing. However, temporary redness, swelling, and other recovery effects may still occur.
The appropriate treatment settings and number of sessions depend on each patient's skin concerns and desired results.
One of the most versatile features of Helix is its ability to combine 10,600 nm CO₂ laser energy with 1570 nm nonablative laser energy in a customized treatment.
This combined approach is known as Fusion.
By incorporating both wavelengths, Fusion allows our providers to address skin resurfacing and dermal remodeling through complementary mechanisms.
The CO₂ component creates controlled microscopic areas of resurfacing, while the nonablative wavelength delivers thermal energy to support remodeling within the skin.
Depending on the selected treatment parameters, the wavelengths can be delivered in coordinated patterns during the procedure.
This combination provides another option for patients who may benefit from addressing multiple aspects of skin aging and texture.
Fusion allows us to customize how much resurfacing and nonablative energy is delivered, rather than relying on a single treatment approach.
As with other laser procedures, recovery depends on the settings selected, the treatment area, and the patient's individual healing response.
For patients with more pronounced wrinkles, textural irregularities, or visible signs of skin aging, a more intensive CO₂ resurfacing treatment may be appropriate.
Helix allows our providers to adjust CO₂ treatment parameters, including energy delivery and pulse characteristics, to achieve different levels of resurfacing.
This gives us the ability to recommend a more aggressive treatment when a greater degree of correction is clinically appropriate.
More intensive resurfacing generally requires additional recovery time and careful post-treatment care.
Our goal is to help patients understand the relationship between treatment intensity, expected improvement, and downtime so they can make informed decisions.
One of the most important things we discuss during a laser consultation is how much recovery time a patient can realistically accommodate.
Some patients want a lighter treatment that fits into a busy schedule.
Others are willing to plan for a longer healing period if a more intensive approach is appropriate for their concerns.
The Helix platform gives Radiance the flexibility to offer several treatment options rather than limiting patients to a single level of resurfacing.
While more intensive treatments may provide greater correction for certain concerns, they are not necessarily the best choice for every patient.
Our philosophy is to select the appropriate treatment—not simply the most aggressive one.
Although laser resurfacing can be performed throughout the year, fall and winter offer several practical advantages.
Many laser treatments require careful sun protection before and after treatment.
With shorter days and typically less time spent outdoors, fall can make it easier to follow recommended precautions.
Avoiding tanning and protecting healing skin from UV exposure are important steps in reducing the risk of complications, including unwanted pigmentation changes.
Laser resurfacing stimulates a healing and remodeling process that continues beyond the initial recovery period.
While some improvements may become noticeable relatively early, collagen remodeling and changes in skin texture can continue developing over the following weeks and months.
Beginning treatment in the fall allows time for these improvements to develop.
Different resurfacing treatments involve different recovery periods.
Some patients prefer a lighter CoolPeel treatment with relatively limited downtime, while others may choose a more intensive treatment and plan for additional recovery.
Scheduling early allows time for healing and follow-up treatments when appropriate.
Our team can help determine the best treatment schedule based on your goals and upcoming events.
As Radiance Skin Therapy & Laser Center celebrates its 20th anniversary, we're reflecting on the philosophy that has guided our practice since opening in 2006.
Founded by Anne Pientka, RN, BSN, Radiance began as a small, two-room clinic and has grown into a comprehensive medical aesthetics center serving patients throughout the Madison area.
Over the years, we've continually evaluated new technologies, treatment approaches, and clinical techniques to provide individualized care.
Our investment in the Helix laser platform reflects that commitment.
We selected Helix because it offers the versatility to customize resurfacing treatments rather than limiting patients to one approach.
But advanced technology is only part of the equation.
Experience, careful patient assessment, appropriate treatment selection, and individualized settings are equally important in achieving beautiful, natural-looking results.
At Radiance, we believe the best treatment is the one that addresses your individual concerns while respecting your skin, your goals, and your lifestyle.
Whether you're interested in a lighter CoolPeel treatment, nonablative skin rejuvenation with Sultra, combined resurfacing with Fusion, or more intensive CO₂ resurfacing, the first step is understanding your skin and your goals.
During your consultation, our experienced providers will evaluate your concerns, discuss your desired results, and recommend an individualized treatment plan.
We'll also explain what to expect regarding recovery, aftercare, and the number of treatments that may be appropriate.
