What Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are some of the most popular facial injectables available. These gel-like substances are strategically added to the lips to give them a plumper appearance. Like many other temporary fillers, lip fillers contain hyaluronic acid. Although they can’t stop the aging process, they can temporarily give the lips a fuller appearance.
Lip injections with fillers offer many advantages, including restoring size and definition to lips that have become thinner or flattened due to aging, giving the lips a more dramatic and poutier appearance by increasing fullness, and correcting asymmetry of the lips.

Which Types of Fillers Are Used for Enhancing the Lips?
JUVEDERM® and Restylane® fillers are commonly used for lip injections. They both work by adding the volume directly to the lips.
JUVEDERM® Ultra Plus XC adds more noticeable volume for patients who want to enlarge their pout, while JUVEDERM VOLBELLA® lip injections are ideal for subtle, smaller embellishments or adding a small amount of volume. VOLBELLA® can also smooth lines around the lips.
Restylane® Refyne™ is another option for volumizing the lips, enhacing them to improve their size and shape.
What Is a BOTOX® Lip Flip?
BOTOX® is an injectable treatment that contains a purified form of botulinum toxin and works by blocking nerve signals to relax tense muscles. Unlike lip injections with fillers, a BOTOX® lip flip doesn’t actually create fullness. Instead, it makes the upper lip appear fuller.
For a BOTOX® lip flip, small doses of the injectable are added to the muscle above the lip, which causes the upper lip to gradually roll outward. BOTOX® lip injections produce more low-key, less obvious results compared to fillers, so they can be ideal for a patient who wants a very subtle improvement.
BOTOX® can also be used in this area to soften lines caused by repeated pursing of the lips or to treat a “gummy smile” by relaxing an upper lip that curls upward too much and reveals an excess of gum when you smile.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Lip Injections?
Most patients who are in good physical health, have a positive outlook and realistic expectations, and are non-smokers would be considered good candidates for lip injections with fillers or neuromodulators. What Can You Expect from Recovery and Results After Lip Injections?
BOTOX® and fillers are both quick to administer, are minimally invasive, and have little to no downtime or side effects. The results from lip injections with fillers are noticeable right away, while BOTOX® lip flip results appear within a few days because it takes a little more time for the neuromodulator to affect the muscle.
Both treatments are temporary. BOTOX® lip injections have a duration of eight to 10 weeks, while the lifespan of lip fillers varies depending on what type of lip filler is used.
Are There Cosmetic Treatments That Complement Lip Injections?
Along with lip injections, fillers can also be used to enhance other areas of the face. Dermal fillers in the JUVEDERM® collection can target the cheeks and jawline for contouring. Restylane® fillers can be applied to many of the same areas.
