Photorejuvenation with IPL and BBL
Intense Pulsed Light and Broad Band Light in Madison, WI
Light can have a negative or positive impact on the skin. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun, for instance, can cause cosmetic damage and worse, while focused light, properly applied, can reverse early signs of aging. Radiance Skin Therapy makes use of two light-based devices for beneficial photorejuvenation: IPL and BBL. Madison-area women and men who want to address anything from discrete pigmentation problems to overall skin tone and texture can enjoy a smoother, more even look.
IPL stands for intense pulsed light, while BBL stands for broad band light. These treatments involve pulses of multiple wavelengths that heat the skin and promote change.
Photorejuvenation with IPL
The IPL offered at Radiance Skin Therapy visibly improves pigmentation issues, age and sun spots, vascularity, general redness, and overall skin appearance. We use the Lumenis® M22™ for IPL photorejuvenation. This system allows us to treat more than 30 skin conditions and imperfections caused by sun damage and other environmental stressors. The energy-based treatment targets pigmented cells to improve overall pigmentation, as well as the look of age/sun spots, visible vessels, rosacea, acne, and overall skin health.
This multi-modality platform also allows Radiance to offer numerous combination therapies for the ultimate in customized skin rejuvenation. IPL combined with our fractional laser, for example, will improve skin tone and texture, increase collagen production, and address large pores, stretch marks, scars, and more.

Photorejuvenation with BBL
The innovative broad band light (BBL) technology available at Radiance Skin Therapy delivers specific forms of light energy to heat the surface layers of the skin. The light absorbed by the targeted areas stimulates skin cells to generate new collagen, effectively changing fine red vessels that make our faces appear red. The energy also impacts unwanted melanin responsible for pigmented lesions such as age and sun spots. This process restores your skin to its natural beauty by reducing the appearance of blemishes and making the skin smoother, more vibrant, and younger looking.
BBL treatments can correct sun damage, vascularity, and fine lines. We typically suggest one to three BBL treatments to maximize results for a more refreshed, rejuvenated, and youthful appearance.
Are IPL/BBL Treatments Right for You?
We encourage each person to share their ultimate cosmetic goals with us at an initial consultation, as well as point out any specific cosmetic concerns they have. This, plus a skin assessment, will allow us to create a custom-designed plan. Each person’s situation and desires will be different, so the types and numbers of treatments will vary from person to person.
In cases where IPL/BBL is deemed the most appropriate treatment, we will explain the specific light source being used, as well as what to do to prepare for the session itself and how to best care for your skin after.
What to Expect from an IPL or BBL Session
Since IPL and BBL both deliver light energy into the skin, they have common results. Spots and other pigment-based problems take days to weeks to correct, leading to clearer skin. Similarly, collagen takes time to build up in the skin when renewed production starts, so the look of wrinkles, laxity, and other signs of aging will gradually improve in the weeks and months after a session or series of treatments.
After IPL/BBL treatments, be sure to avoid or minimize ultraviolet radiation exposure, as your skin will be particularly sensitive to sunlight in the following days. Wear a suitable sunscreen when going outdoors (even on overcast days), keep treated skin covered by clothing, and avoid peak sunlight hours by staying inside. Once the skin heals, you can resume typical daily activities—though you should always wear proper sunscreen.
